METHODOLOGY · READ THIS FIRST

How this report was put together.

Read this before citing any number above. The Q1 2026 report is the launch edition of an ongoing quarterly series. The headline statistics, category breakdown, and top-wasted-services rankings on this page are modeled, not measured from our own users — because the SubscriptionShame calculator launched in April 2026 and we have not yet accumulated enough usage to publish primary data.

The model combines:

  1. Published US surveys (the cited statistics): C+R Research 2024 Subscription Survey (n=1,000+ US adults), Bango Subscription Wars 2024 (n=5,000 across 5 markets, US weighted), Empower 2025 Subscription Spending Report. The headline averages ($219–$273/month, 42% forgotten subscriptions, etc.) come directly from these reports and are accurately quoted.
  2. Our pricing database: our maintained snapshot of 90+ services at standard American retail tier as of April 2026.
  3. Reasonable estimates: the per-category "waste share" rankings and the top-10 wasted services list are constructed by combining the surveys above with our pricing database. We label them as estimates, not measurements.

From Q2 2026 onward, we will replace the modeled numbers with aggregated, anonymous patterns from real calculator usage. No individual user data is collected — only aggregate counts (e.g., "what percentage of users who added Netflix rated it 1 or 2 dots"). We will note in each future report which numbers are modeled vs. measured.
