How to Cancel Planet Fitness Without Going In
A 1.4-million-view TikTok exists purely because people are afraid they have to walk into a Planet Fitness to quit it. You don't. Many clubs now take cancellations online, and a $5 certified-mail letter works at every club in America, and this page includes the template. What actually costs people money isn't the method. It's three billing dates almost nobody checks. All facts below verified July 8, 2026.
Try this first: the online cancellation (60 seconds)
- Log in at planetfitness.com (or the PF app) with the email on your membership.
- Go to My Account → Manage Membership.
- If your club supports it, a Cancel option appears. Follow the prompts and screenshot the confirmation screen.
- Watch for the confirmation email. No email within a day means the cancellation may not have registered. Don't assume.
The honest caveat: availability depends on your home club and state, and members widely report the Manage button simply not working. A broken page is not a cancellation. If you hit either wall, skip straight to the letter. Don't burn a week retrying a button while the 10th approaches.
The three dates that decide whether you pay again
| Date | What happens | Your deadline |
|---|---|---|
| The 17th (monthly) | Monthly dues drafted from your checking account | Cancellation must be received by the 10th to stop that month's bill |
| Your annual fee date | The separate $49 annual fee, set by when you joined, shown in your agreement | Cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the fee date |
| Your commitment end date | Promotional memberships can carry a 12-month commitment with a $58 buyout for leaving early. No Commitment plans have no fee | Check your signed agreement before choosing a date |
That $49 annual fee is the classic ambush: people cancel "after the 17th payment" thinking they're done, then the annual fee lands weeks later because it runs on its own calendar. Find your annual fee date first (it's in your membership agreement or shown in your online account) and plan the cancellation around both dates.
The certified-mail cancellation (works at every club)
Planet Fitness's own FAQ confirms it: written notification mailed to your home club ends your membership. "Home club" means the specific gym you signed up at, not corporate headquarters. Find its street address on the PF site's club locator.
- Copy the letter below and fill in your details. Your keytag number is on your black keytag or in the PF app.
- Print and sign it. A physical signature matters for gym contracts.
- At any post office, send it certified mail with return receipt to your home club's street address. Cost: about $5–$9.
- Keep the receipt and tracking number. The return receipt is legal proof of the date PF received your cancellation, the date the deadlines above run on.
- Check your bank after the next 17th. If dues draft anyway, you now have the paperwork to reverse it (escalation table below).

If they keep charging you anyway
| Step | What to do | When |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Call your home club | Reference your certified-mail tracking number and received date. Front desk can see cancellations; ask for the manager if not | First charge after cancellation |
| 2. Written follow-up | Second letter (or email if your club provided one) citing the return-receipt date and demanding a refund of post-cancellation charges | Club doesn't fix it in one cycle |
| 3. Bank EFT dispute | PF drafts from checking via EFT: dispute the withdrawals with your bank and show the return receipt. Banks can also block future drafts (do this only AFTER proper cancellation, or unpaid dues can go to collections) | Charges continue |
| 4. State attorney general + FTC | Gym billing complaints are a staple of state AG offices. File with your state AG and at reportfraud.ftc.gov, attaching the letter and receipt | Pattern of obstruction |
What the law actually says in 2026
Here's the part most guides get wrong: the FTC's "Click-to-Cancel" rule — which would have forced gyms nationwide to offer cancellation as easy as signup — was vacated by a federal appeals court in July 2025 before it ever took effect. There is no federal easy-cancel mandate as of mid-2026.
What protects you instead is state law. Several states, California and New York among them, require health clubs to accept written cancellation and, in some cases, online cancellation, and give you statutory cooling-off and refund rights. That's why the certified-mail route works everywhere: a signed, dated, provably delivered written notice is the one method every state's gym statute respects. (State-by-state specifics are coming in our gym cancellation laws guide.)
What Planet Fitness costs, for the record
| Membership | Monthly | Annual fee | Cancel fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic (No Commitment) | $15 | $49 | $0 |
| Black Card | varies by club (typically ~$25–28) | $49 | $0 on No Commitment terms |
| Promotional 12-month plans | varies | $49 | $58 buyout before month 12 |
Real annual cost of the $15 plan: $229 with the annual fee. In SubscriptionShame calculator sessions, gym memberships are among the most commonly flagged low-usage subscriptions: the classic January signup rated at 1 dot by June. If that's you, the math is simple: $229/year buys a lot of running shoes. See what your actual per-visit cost is in our gym membership ROI breakdown.

Reveal my shame scoreFAQ
Can I cancel Planet Fitness online?
At many clubs, yes: log in at planetfitness.com or the app, go to My Account → Manage Membership → Cancel. Availability depends on your home club and state, and the Manage button is widely reported as unreliable. If it doesn't work, certified mail works everywhere and creates proof.
How do I cancel by mail?
Send the letter template above by certified mail with return receipt to your home club, the gym you signed up at, not headquarters. Include your name, date of birth, keytag number, and a request for written confirmation. The return receipt is your proof of delivery date.
When do I need to cancel to avoid being charged again?
By the 10th of the month to stop the monthly draft on the 17th, and by the 25th of the month before your annual fee date to dodge the $49 fee, which runs on its own calendar based on your signup date.
Does Planet Fitness charge a cancellation fee?
No Commitment memberships (the standard Classic and most Black Card plans) have no cancellation fee, per PF's own membership pages. Some promotional 12-month plans carry a $58 early buyout. Your signed agreement is the authoritative document.
Doesn't the FTC Click-to-Cancel rule force gyms to let me cancel online?
Not anymore: a federal appeals court vacated the rule in July 2025 before it took effect. State laws (California, New York, and others) are what require gyms to accept written or online cancellation in 2026.
Can I just have my bank block the payments?
You can, but it doesn't end the membership, and unpaid dues can be sent to collections. Cancel properly first, then dispute or block only if charges continue after your proven cancellation date.
