Cancel Audible Without Losing Your Credits: Do It in This Order

Every unused Audible credit is $14.95 you already paid. Cancel with three credits sitting in your account and Audible keeps roughly $45 of your money and the audiobooks. Its own help page says so plainly: "Your unused credits will be lost." The whole trick to quitting Audible is sequencing, and the sequence takes ten minutes. Facts verified against audible.com, July 8, 2026.

The right order (do not skip step 1)

  1. Count your credits. Audible desktop site → your name → Account Details. Credits show at the top.
  2. Spend every credit now. Titles bought with credits are yours forever, membership or not. Can't pick? Grab long books from your wishlist; you can listen anytime later. Unspent credits at cancellation = deleted.
  3. Download anything you care about in the app while your membership is active (optional but tidy).
  4. Decide: pause or cancel? If you have credits you can't spend yet, or you're just money-tight this quarter, the pause (next section) preserves everything. Otherwise:
  5. On the desktop site (not the mobile app), go to Account Details → Cancel membership at the bottom of the page.
  6. Click through the retention offers. Audible typically shows a discounted-months deal or a free pause before the final button. Take one if it genuinely suits you; otherwise continue.
  7. Confirm and save the confirmation email. Benefits run to the end of your paid billing cycle, then credits and Plus Catalog access end.

The pause: the option Audible half-hides

Audible has an official membership pause that stops billing while preserving your unused credits; its own help center documents it. It's typically up to three months and generally offered once a year, and it often appears as a counteroffer inside the cancellation flow. If your real problem is "I have 4 credits and no time," pause, spend the credits over the break, then cancel clean at the end. One caveat from long-time users: pausing preserves credits, but credit expiration dates still apply on some legacy plans, so spend old credits first regardless.

Where your cancel button actually lives

How you're billedWhere to cancel
Audible / Amazon (most US members)audible.com on desktop → Account Details → Cancel membership. The mobile apps don't offer it
Apple (subscribed in the iOS app years ago)iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Audible → Cancel. Audible's own site can't touch an Apple-billed plan
Google PlayPlay Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Audible

The "why is it so hard to cancel Audible" complaints mostly come from hunting for the button in the app, where it doesn't exist. It's a two-minute job on the desktop site.

What Audible costs in 2026, for the record

PlanPriceCredits
Premium Plus$14.95/mo1/month
Premium Plus 2-credit$22.95/mo2/month
Audible Standard (newer plan)$8.99/mocatalog access
Audible Plus (legacy, current members only)$7.95/mocatalog access

At $179.40/year, Premium Plus is a fine deal for someone who finishes a book a month and a silent leak for everyone else. In SubscriptionShame calculator sessions, Audible is a frequent "rated 2 dots, forgot the credits existed" entry. The free replacement most people don't try first: your library card. Libby and Hoopla stream real audiobooks free through US public libraries, and Spotify includes audiobook hours on its paid plans you may already have.

FAQ

Do I keep my credits if I cancel?

No. Audible's help page states unused credits are lost when membership ends. Books already bought with credits stay yours forever. Spend the credits first; that's the entire trick.

Can I pause instead of canceling?

Yes: the official pause stops billing and preserves credits, typically for up to three months, and often gets offered inside the cancellation flow. Right move if you have credits you can't spend yet.

Do my audiobooks disappear?

No. Everything acquired with credits or cash is permanently yours, with or without a membership. You lose unused credits, the Plus Catalog, and member discounts.

What does Audible cost now?

Premium Plus $14.95/mo (1 credit) or $22.95/mo (2 credits); the newer Standard plan is $8.99/mo; legacy Plus is $7.95/mo for existing members. Verified July 8, 2026.

Why isn't there a cancel button in my app?

Amazon-billed memberships only cancel on the desktop website (Account Details → Cancel membership). If you originally subscribed through Apple, cancel in iPhone Settings → Subscriptions instead.

Will they offer me a deal to stay?

Usually: a discounted rate for a few months or a free pause appears before the final confirmation. Looking costs nothing; take it only if you'd actually use it.
